APenergy Wins ComEd’s Customer Impact Award for Energy Efficiency


ComEd, a unit of Chicago-based Exelon Corporation, had its Energy Efficiency Service Provider (EESP) Kickoff Event on February 2, 2023, hosted by Cascade Energy. The APenergy team attended the event and received the Customer Impact Award for providing the most energy savings to ComEd’s industrial systems program in 2023.

The event brought energy advisors and providers together to learn about important program updates, share ideas, and discuss ways to improve and maximize program outcomes. Additionally, the event shared tips on ways to significantly impact customer goals and identify more opportunities in the field. The event also had expert-led sessions that focused on refreshing technical knowledge.

Why APenergy

APenergy has generated more verified savings consecutively than any other EESP in ComEd’s industrial systems program for the last four years. In 2021, APenergy was responsible for 41 percent of the total energy saving for the program and nearly half of the program’s savings in 2022.

Continuously scoring one of the highest actualized savings rates, APenergy worked exceptionally hard at the end of the last four years to help ComEd achieve savings goals by exceeding its own put-forth goals.

“When ComEd rolled out the end-of-year bonus structure for projects, we decided to put all hands on deck,” says Marc Prosch, director of operations at APenergy. “We really tried to inform all our customers about the opportunities ComEd provided to implement projects in 2022. We poured a lot of resources into the 2022 ComEd program, and I really appreciate the recognition of that effort.”

ComEd’s Industrial System Program

ComEd, short for Commonwealth Edison, is an electric utility company that serves the Chicago metropolitan area and Northern Illinois. One of ComEd’s initiatives is its industrial systems program, which aims to help industrial customers reduce their energy consumption and costs.

The industrial systems program has been highly successful in helping industrial customers reduce their energy consumption and costs. Since the program’s inception, over 1,700 projects have been completed, resulting in annual energy savings of over 1.4 million megawatt hours (MWh) and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of over 800,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2). These savings represent significant benefits to customers in terms of reduced energy bills and improved energy efficiency.

The program provides incentives to help reduce the financial barriers for customers to invest in energy efficiency projects, which may have a more extended payback period. The program also provides technical assistance and resources to help customers identify the most effective energy-saving measures and implement them efficiently.

The program’s three main categories:

  • Standard measures are pre-approved measures for energy savings across many industrial sectors
  • Custom measures are specific energy-saving projects tailored to a customer’s unique needs and situation
  • Retro-commissioning is a process of optimizing the performance of existing equipment by identifying and addressing inefficiencies


Energy Efficiency Service Providers

Customers must work with ComEd-approved energy efficiency service providers (EESPs) to participate in the industrial systems program. EESPs are companies trained and certified to provide technical assistance and project implementation services for the program.

EESPs work with industrial customers to identify and implement energy-saving projects. The industrial systems program offers incentives for various measures, including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), lighting, motor and drive, and compressed air system. The incentives are based on energy saved and can cover up to 50 percent of project costs.

Working with a registered EESP can provide significant benefits to industrial customers. EESPs have the knowledge and expertise to identify energy-saving opportunities that customers might overlook. They can also provide technical assistance and resources to help customers implement measures effectively. Additionally, incentives offered by the industrial systems program can offset a project’s costs and provide a faster payback period for the customer.

Exciting ComEd Update for 2023

ComEd also announced an exciting update for Northern Illinois industrial manufacturers at the EESP Kickoff event. Companies with peak demands of up to 400 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month can now utilize ComEd’s small business program.

Moreover, ComEd is offering a bonus on prescriptive incentives for its small business and standard incentive programs in 2023. Projects with a pre-application submitted between Jan. 1 and March 31, 2023, and a final application submitted by Oct. 31, 2023, can receive a 25 percent bonus in addition to the new 2023 incentive rates.

“The 2023 program changes are a product of the hard work that service providers and Cascade Energy (the program implementer) put into 2022,” Prosch says. “The first year after a new implementation team takes the reins is always a learning process. However, Cascade Energy has set a precedent for improving the analytical rigor required and supported that messaging at the 2023 EESP Kickoff Event.”
